Chapter One
The sun was low in the sky as Kheysana looked over the ocean from the top of Fire Mountain. Her home for as long as she could remember, one of her favourite pastimes was running poachers off her island. Officially, the island belonged to the Orange Island archipelago. Unofficially she lived here longer. Running a hand through her long crimson hair she sighed and pulled her black coat tighter around her lithe frame.
“I think it’s time we paid Them a visit.” She said to the pokemon behind her.
Are you sure you’re ready? It hasn’t been that long since-
“I’m as ready as I’ll ever be my sweet. If not now then when? If we wait too much longer They might come to visit us, and I can think of nothing worse.” She said, turning to the pokemon. “I’ll meet you there. I need to take the long way, to get everything out of my system before I meet the new guy.”
The large pokemon eyed Kheysana carefully before nodding. Letting out a mighty call, she launched herself from her perch. Wings held close, she dove to the bottom of the island, opening them at the very last minute.
Kheysana smiled as she watched the display. It was the only thing left in the world that could make her catch her breath. When she could no longer see the large bird pokemon, she began her own decent to the bottom of the island, hers being a lot slower and much more physical.
Once at the base of the mountain, the fiery teen entered the cave she had called home for as long as she could remember. Illuminated by ever burning fire, protected from everything in small alcoves, one could see the contents of the cave easily. There were three rooms, one on the far side of the cave which served as a bedroom. The second room was accessable only through the bedroom, and it contained everything Kheysana held dear to her. The last room was the main body of the cave. Decorating the walls were large murals of fire pokemon. Every fire pokemon had a spot on the cave wall. The largest images were of the legendary fire pokemon; Ho-oh, Entei and Moltres.
Heading into her bedroom she pulled a dusty old black knapsack from a chest at the bottom of her bed. Heading to her drawers she dragged out several shirts, some pants and a couple of skirts before shoving them into the knapsack. With her clothes packed she went into the final room. On the far side of the room a large fire was roaring, created from the flames of Ho-oh and Moltres it was said it would never die unless doused with ice created from Lugia and Articuno.
Using the fire for light, Kheysana turned to the wall.
“Who to take, who to take.” She murmured.
Decorating the wall was rows upon rows of pokeballls. Each pokeball was black with red, orange or yellow flames. To a casual passerby, they were all the same. But to Kheysana they were all unique. She knew which ball contained what, simply by the way the flame was positioned.
Reaching up, she pulled down a mostly black ball, and one with orange flames. “Lucy, Ash aaannnndddd.” She murmured, caressing each ball. Just as she was able to take down a third, a ball with dark red flames covering most of the ball fell down. Kheysana smiled. “Of course, how silly of me.” She said, picking up the final ball. “Lucy, Ash and Scott.”
With her pokemon selected, and her bag packed, Kheysana went back into her bedroom and lay down on the bed, willing sleep to come. It would be a long trip for her tomorrow. Being born of the fire, sea sickness plagued Kheysana constantly, and was the main reason she travelled by air if she ever had to leave her island. Having sent her only means of air transportation ahead of her, Kheysana was forced to travel by boat if she was to get anywhere.
As predicted, Kheysana was sick for most of the journey. Getting from Fire Island to Shamouti Island was the easy part. It took all of Kheysana’s concentration getting from one to the other. Going from Shamouti Island to the mainland was harder. The only relief the fire trainer had came when they stopped at each island along the way, to collect new people who were also headed to the mainland.
Several times on the voyage, an old woman pulled Kheysana aside. Kheysana guessed her to be in her mid 50’s, her hair was an off white, close to grey but her eyes were a vivid shade of blue. One that reminded Kheysana of a girl she once knew long ago. Apparently Kheysana’s amber/red eyes reminded the old woman of the same thing. It wasn’t until Kheysana lied and told the woman it must be her mother who she grew up with that the woman left her alone.
A pang of loneliness shot through her after the woman left. Memories of running across the sands of Shamouti Island with the other children. Most of the children had left the island and journeyed to the mainland in search of bigger and better things, leaving Kheysana with the older people. One girl had reminded behind. Neira. They had spent hours together talking about nothing, enjoying each other’s company. In the end, Kheysana was forced to leave the island behind when it started to become noticeable that she wasn’t aging like the others.
A brief trip to Cinnabar Island was paradise for Kheysana, who indulged in several hot dishes as well as a new flame licked robe. Eventually the ship docked at Pallet Town, and Kheysana departed the ship for the last time. Unfortunately the trip to Pallet Town was the worst leg of the voyage, and Kheysana was forced to empty the contents of her stomach before she was able to disembark.
