There is a first time for everything, or so the cliche goes. However, Aaron liked to think of the old saying a bit differently. He thought it should say "there is a first time for everything, providing you have the guts enough to stick around while it happens. Other wise, you are a wuss and should go find a rock to hide under. Aaron was nearly about to take the latter option. This was his first pokemon, and he didn't quite know what to make of it. He was ready for an adventure, yes, his blood seemed to scream at him every time he wasn't on the road. But, leaving his family, especially his little brother would be tough. That, and he was about to blow a fuse from the waiting, and the creaking noises his chair outside the lab made.

The door swung open. "Ah, another trainer. I haven't seen one of those in more than a week!" The professor chuckled for a moment, and, abruptly, he stopped. "Oh, goodness. Where are my manners?" Shaking his head, he continued, "I'm Professor Pine, and I'm in charge of pushing the trainers in the proper direction. I've been instructed to give you your first Pokémon and also what we call the 'starter pack.'" He stepped aside and motioned for Aaron to enter his laboratory. "Don't mind the clutter--- we've spent the last few weeks repairing these darned machines!" He pointed to the opposite wall, which was literally covered in dials, lights, and switches.

"Ah, that looks..." Aaron glanced at the wall quickly and decided to spare the professor the trouble of explaining what the machines were and simply commented, "irksome." Stepping over some heavy-looking crates, Aaron remarked, "So... I guess I should tell you the type of pokemon I'm looking for, huh?" Already getting twitchy with excitement, Aaron didn't give the professor time to respond before blurting out, "Well, I was thinking about it, and I thought a bird-type pokemon would be a good match!" Regaining himself, Aaron realized that he had taken on a rather dramatic pose and stepped back, embarassed and busy unclenching his fists as he did so. Geez, so much for good first impressions.

The Professor nodded and slowly opened his mouth, "Ye---." He was almost immediately cut off, though, as Aaron had already blurted out another question. He was stunned; even ten seconds after Aaron had grown silent, Professor Pine would not talk. He shook his head and began again, "Yes, I was about to ask you what type of Pokémon you were searching for. It seems, however, that you have already answered my unasked question." He swallowed quickly, only to continue, "A bird-type would be a wonderful starter. We have just a few left, so your choice would be limited to either Pidgey, Starly, or Wingull. I do hope that's not an issue." He smiled and rubbed the back of his neck; this trainer was exceptionally outgoing.

Suddenly, the room fell awkwardly silent. Aaron clammed up, now he had to make a choice. Pidgey was certainly a good starter, many of his friends had started out with a Pidgey in other regions and had been relatively successful in their careers. Well, maybe he wanted to be different. There was also Starly, that finished evolving when it evolved into Staraptor. On second thought, he wasn't the most fond of Staraptors, especially after he had met one. Sheesh, the thing wouldn't stop... glaring. That left Wingull. Wingull... The specie's name seemed to roll around well as he mouthed it silently to himself. It was even a water type, his favorite. That settled it. "I'll take the Wingull! I think that would be the best!" Aaron announced, grinning like and idiot and much less emphatic than he had been before. A shiver went straight down his spine and terminated at his toes. He was excited now, and he knew that he wouldn't let anything stop him on his upcoming journey.
